How many German words do you need for B1 — and which ones?
Around 2,400. That is the official Goethe-Institut B1 Wortliste count, cumulative from A1 to B1 — textbook estimates run up to 3,000, and you only need part of them actively. Here is how the numbers fit together.
Where the numbers come from
Sources disagree because they count different things. The table reconciles the numbers you will actually meet when you research this question.

The 2,400 figure is not a rough guess: the Goethe-Institut's own B1 Wortliste foreword states approximately that many lexical units. The higher 3,000 estimates typically count word families more generously or add comfort headroom beyond the exam basis.
Active vs passive: the number you actually need to produce
The Wortliste range is a recognition target — words you understand when you read or hear them. Nobody actively uses all of it at B1. Your speaking and writing run on a smaller core you know cold: high-frequency verbs, connectors, and the vocabulary of your own daily topics.
That is why word-list study and production practice are different jobs. Flashcards build the recognition range fast; speaking and writing lessons pull a core of it into active use. You need both, but you do not need to "activate" 2,400 words to pass B1.

What the daily pace looks like
Spread over a year, 2,400 words is about 7 new words a day, or roughly 46 a week. With spaced repetition, most of a 20–30 minute daily session goes to reviews rather than new words — that is what makes the pace sustainable. Starting from A2 (around 1,300 words already covered), the remaining B1-tier gap is far smaller.
