Frequently asked questions
The Goethe-Zertifikat is an internationally recognised German language certificate issued by the Goethe-Institut. It certifies your German proficiency from A1 (complete beginner) to C2 (mastery). German citizenship applicants require at least the B1 certificate.
There is no limit on retakes for the Goethe-Zertifikat. You can retake any module — you do not need to retake all four if you failed only one. Each retake costs the full exam fee, which varies by country and exam centre (roughly €100–€200 for B1).
The Goethe-Institut offers online testing for some levels and countries, but in-person exams at official Goethe-Institut centres or licensed exam centres are far more widely available. Check the official Goethe-Institut website for your country to see available formats and dates.
If you fail one or two modules, you can retake only the failed modules within two years without repeating the whole exam. This modular retake option is available for A2, B1, B2, C1, and C2 levels. A1 is typically taken as a whole.
For most legal purposes (citizenship, visa, university) all three are equally accepted. Choose by exam centre availability in your city, exam date proximity, and price. The exam content is closely aligned across providers; preparation transfers well between them.
