Goethe-Zertifikat B2
Goethe-Zertifikat B2 — Complete Guide
Who needs B2
B2 is the threshold for university admission in Germany (alongside DSH or TestDaF), for many regulated professions (medicine, nursing, law), and for white-collar employment in German-speaking environments. It also exceeds the language requirement for citizenship.
Realistic prep time: 6–12 months from B1 with consistent study. The Goethe-Institut estimates 600–800 total learning hours from zero to B2.
Exam structure — all four modules
B2 demands authentic-rate listening, structured argument writing, and discourse-level speaking. The full runtime is about 195 minutes including breaks.
Lesen
Lesen — 5 task formats · 30 items · 65 min
| Teil | Title | Format | Items / Pts | Time |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Teil 1 | Zuordnungsaufgabe matching | matching | 5 · 17 pts | ~13 min |
| Teil 2 | Lückentext cloze gap-fill | cloze gap-fill | 10 · 33 pts | ~13 min |
| Teil 3 | Selektives Lesen multiple choice | multiple choice | 6 · 20 pts | ~13 min |
| Teil 4 | Meinungsäußerungen matching | matching | 4 · 13 pts | ~13 min |
| Teil 5 | Anweisungstext multiple choice | multiple choice | 5 · 17 pts | ~13 min |
You need at least 60 points out of 100 in this module. B2 reading rewards collocational accuracy in cloze tasks — German collocations rarely match L1 calques.
Teil 1: Zuordnungsaufgabe
Match 5 people / situations to 8 candidate texts (3 are distractors).
Teil 2: Lückentext
A cloze article with 10 gaps. Fill from a word bank that contains distractors.
Teil 3: Selektives Lesen
One long text. 6 multiple-choice questions about specific information and intent.
Teil 4: Meinungsäußerungen
Match 4 reader comments to a set of forum posts. Distinguish stance (für / gegen / neutral).
Teil 5: Anweisungstext
An instructional text (regulations, guidelines). 5 multiple-choice questions on detail.
Tips
- Teil 2: test ALL options in each gap — the right one is collocationally correct
- Teil 4: identify the writer's stance (für / gegen / neutral) before matching
Common mistakes
- Using L1-calque logic in Teil 2 gap-fill — German collocations differ
- Missing implicit opinion vs fact distinctions in Teil 4

Tips
- Label your notes by speaker initial in Teil 3
- Train with German radio at full speed before the exam — captioned material trains the wrong reflex
Common mistakes
- Missing implicit attitude or opinion questions (not just facts)
- Not distinguishing speakers in Teil 3 — all comments blur together
Schreiben
Schreiben — 2 task formats · 2 items · 75 min
| Teil | Title | Format | Items / Pts | Time |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Teil 1 | Forumsbeitrag opinion writing (~150 words) | opinion writing (~150 words) | 1 · 60 pts | ~38 min |
| Teil 2 | Formelle Email formal writing (~100–150 words) | formal writing (~100–150 words) | 1 · 40 pts | ~38 min |
You need at least 60 points out of 100 in this module. Structured argument and formal register both score heavily.
Teil 1: Forumsbeitrag
Write a ~150-word forum post or opinion piece on a given topic.
Teil 2: Formelle Email
Write a ~100-word formal email — typically a complaint, request, or application.
Tips
- Teil 1 frame: Einleitung → Argument pro (+ Beispiel) → Argument contra (+ Beispiel) → eigene Meinung
- Teil 2: learn Konjunktiv II for polite requests ("Ich würde mich freuen, wenn…")
Common mistakes
- Writing in informal blog tone for Teil 1 — it should be a structured argument
- Not using formal register for Teil 2 (Sie form, full salutation, formal sign-off)
Sprechen
Sprechen — 2 task formats · 2 items · 15 min
| Teil | Title | Format | Items / Pts | Time |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Teil 1 | Präsentation presentation | presentation | 1 · 50 pts | ~8 min |
| Teil 2 | Diskussion debate | debate | 1 · 50 pts | ~8 min |
You need at least 60 points out of 100 in this module. The exam is taken in pairs, and discourse markers separate B2 candidates from B1 ones.
Teil 1: Präsentation
A 4-minute prepared presentation on a topic with stimulus material.
Teil 2: Diskussion
Structured debate with your partner on a current social topic.
Tips
- Learn B2 discourse markers: "Einerseits… andererseits…", "Im Gegensatz dazu…", "Trotzdem muss man sagen…"
- Teil 2: respond directly to your partner before adding your next point
Common mistakes
- Monologuing in Teil 2 instead of genuinely discussing
- Not signalling concession ("Das stimmt zwar, aber…") — examiners reward this explicitly
