Goethe-Zertifikat B1
Goethe-Zertifikat B1 — Complete Guide
Why B1 matters
B1 is the language requirement for German citizenship (Einbürgerung). It is also the level employers commonly require for entry-level jobs that involve customer contact, and the threshold above which most learners can read newspapers and hold real conversations.
New to the process? See the full German citizenship requirements for 2026, or which B1 certificate counts for your application.
Realistic prep time: 4–8 months from A2 with consistent daily study (30–60 min/day). Allow 350–600 total learning hours from complete beginner.
Exam structure — all four modules
The B1 exam runs four independent modules. Each is graded separately on a 100-point scale and you need at least 60% in each module to pass.
Lesen
Lesen — 5 task formats · 30 items · 65 min
| Teil | Title | Format | Items / Pts | Time |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Teil 1 | Globales Lesen matching | matching | 5 · 17 pts | ~13 min |
| Teil 2 | Selektives Lesen T/F/Not stated | T/F/Not stated | 5 · 17 pts | ~13 min |
| Teil 3 | Detailbeschreibung multiple choice | multiple choice | 10 · 33 pts | ~13 min |
| Teil 4 | Selektives Lesen II matching | matching | 5 · 16 pts | ~13 min |
| Teil 5 | Textreproduktion cloze gap-fill | cloze gap-fill | 5 · 17 pts | ~13 min |
You need at least 60 points out of 100 in this module. B1 modules are passed independently, so another module cannot compensate for a failed Lesen result.
Teil 1: Globales Lesen
Match 5 short news headlines to 8 statements. Three statements are distractors with no matching headline.
Teil 2: Selektives Lesen
Read one longer text (notice board, advertisement, or short article). Mark 5 statements as True, False, or Not stated.
Teil 3: Detailbeschreibung
2–3 medium-length texts (letters, emails, newspaper articles). 10 multiple-choice questions, 3 options each.
Teil 4: Selektives Lesen II
One longer structured text. Match 5 statements to the section of the text where each is supported.
Teil 5: Textreproduktion
A short cloze passage with 5 gaps. Pick the best word for each gap from a provided list.
Tips
- For Teil 1: read the 8 statements first, then scan headlines for keywords
- For Teil 5: read all 10 gapped sentences before filling any — later context clarifies earlier gaps
- Pace yourself: ~13 min per Teil leaves a buffer to revisit anything tricky
Common mistakes
- Reading word-by-word instead of scanning for gist
- Missing the "Not stated" option in Teil 2 — only mark False when the text contradicts the statement
- Using context clues wrong in the Teil 5 cloze — read the whole sentence before choosing
Hören
Hören — 4 task formats · 30 items · 40 min
| Teil | Title | Format | Items / Pts | Time |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Teil 1 | Kurze Texte multiple choice | multiple choice | 10 · 34 pts | ~10 min |
| Teil 2 | Vortrag / Information multiple choice | multiple choice | 5 · 17 pts | ~10 min |
| Teil 3 | Gespräch T/F | T/F | 7 · 23 pts | ~10 min |
| Teil 4 | Diskussion matching | matching | 8 · 26 pts | ~10 min |
You need at least 60 points out of 100 in this module. Teil 1 and Teil 4 are played twice; Teil 2 and Teil 3 are played once.
Teil 1: Kurze Texte
5 short announcements, messages, or adverts. Two questions per text: one True/False and one multiple-choice. Played twice.

0:00Teil 2: Vortrag / Information

0:00In the real exam this Teil is played once — try listening only once before answering.
Teil 3: Gespräch
One overheard conversation between native speakers. 7 True/False statements. Played once.
Teil 3 — Audio played once
Listen to a streetcar conversation about the weekend, then mark seven statements True or False.
0:00In the real exam this Teil is played once — try listening only once before answering.

Tips
- Read each block of questions before its audio starts
- Teil 3 plays twice — use the first pass for rough notes, the second to confirm
- Wrong answers do NOT deduct points — always guess if unsure
Common mistakes
- Panicking when an audio is played only once — momentary blanks rarely cost more than a single point
- Not using the answer time between plays to read upcoming questions
- Mistaking similar-sounding numbers (13 / 30, 17 / 70) — listen for the stress
Schreiben
Schreiben — 2 task formats · 2 items · 60 min
| Teil | Title | Format | Items / Pts | Time |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Teil 1 | Mitteilung schreiben semi-formal writing (~80–100 words) | semi-formal writing (~80–100 words) | 1 · 40 pts | ~30 min |
| Teil 2 | Brief / Email semi-formal writing (~80–100 words) | semi-formal writing (~80–100 words) | 1 · 60 pts | ~30 min |
You need at least 60 points out of 100 in this module. Marking covers task completion, coherence, vocabulary range, and grammatical accuracy.
Teil 1: Mitteilung schreiben
A semi-formal community-board notice (~80 words) covering 3 specified bullet points.
Teil 2: Brief / Email
A semi-formal letter or email responding to a prompt — usually a complaint, request, or offer (~100 words).
Tips
- Teil 1: open with a clear heading like "Bekanntmachung:" or "Liebe Mitglieder,"
- Teil 2: address ALL points in the prompt — examiners scan for them
- Spend ~20 min on Teil 1, ~40 min on Teil 2, leaving 5 min to re-read and fix article/case errors
Common mistakes
- Writing too informally for Teil 1 — it is a public notice, not a personal email
- Ignoring one of the 3 bullet points in Teil 1
- Going far over or under the suggested word count
Sprechen

Teil 2: Präsentation
A 2-minute prepared presentation on a daily-life topic chosen from two cards.
Teil 3: Feedback geben

- Teil 2 structure: Einleitung → 2–3 Punkte → Fazit
- Practice fillers: "Gute Idee, aber…", "Das stimmt, und außerdem…"
Common mistakes
- Doing all the talking in Teil 1 and not involving your partner
- Presenting for less than 90 seconds in Teil 2
- Giving only one-word reactions in Teil 3
