What each module asks of you at B1

This mock follows the real Goethe-Zertifikat B1 paper module for module. Lesen, Hören and Schreiben are the written exam — 165 minutes in one sitting — and Sprechen is taken separately, usually in a pair.

Lesen (Reading): 5 Teile, 30 tasks, 65 minutes, worth 100 points. Task formats: richtig / falsch, multiple choice and matching.
Hören (Listening): 4 Teile, 30 tasks, 40 minutes, worth 100 points. Task formats: richtig / falsch, multiple choice and matching.
Schreiben (Writing): 3 Teile, 3 tasks, 60 minutes, worth 100 points. Task formats: a written response.
Sprechen (Speaking): 3 Teile, 3 tasks, 15 minutes, worth 100 points. Task formats: a spoken response.

Scoring

How the score works, and what 60% actually means

Each module carries 100 points, 400 across the paper. You pass at 60% — 240 of 400 points.

The Goethe-Institut awards the Goethe-Zertifikat B1 on your overall result, so a weak module can be carried by a strong one. That is worth knowing before you panic mid-Hören: the 100 points you are losing there are 25% of the paper, not all of it.

We grade Lesen and Hören here — 60 tasks, scored the moment you submit. Schreiben and Sprechen are judged by an examiner in the real exam, so no honest automatic score exists for them; you get model answers to compare against instead.

Choosing a level

Is B1 the right level to sit?

Intermediate — independent use across familiar topics. Required minimum for German citizenship.

Compared with A2: A2 runs 105 minutes over 45 tasks; B1 runs 180 and asks 66. B1's Lesen alone gives you 65 minutes against 30 — longer texts, not just more of them.
Compared with B2: B2 steps up to 195 minutes and 64 tasks. Upper intermediate — fluent on abstract topics. Typically required for university admission and professional recognition.

B1 is the level German citizenship asks for, which is why most people arrive here rather than at A2. If you can finish this mock inside 180 minutes and clear 60%, you are in the right room.
