How to practice gender so it actually sticks

Gender is a vocabulary problem wearing a grammar costume. No rule tells you that a table is masculine, so the only thing that works is meeting each noun with its article, often, and noticing when you were wrong.

Say the article, never the bare noun

Learn "die Tür", not "Tür". A noun stored without its article has to be guessed at every time you use it.

A wrong answer is the useful one

The nouns you miss here are the ones worth a memory hook. Getting one right tells you nothing you did not already know.

Recognition first, recall later

Choosing between three options is easier than producing the article cold — and it is what you are doing when you read. Start here, then use the noun in a sentence.

Where to look the forms up

Once you know the gender, the form follows from the case. All 16 definite forms and the 12 indefinite ones are on one page: der, die, das in all four cases.
