How do I know which case a preposition takes?

Prepositions are grouped by the case they require, and you need to memorise these groups. What are Wechselpräpositionen?

Wechselpräpositionen (two-way prepositions) are 9 prepositions that can take either Akkusativ or Dativ: an, auf, hinter, in, neben, über, unter, vor, zwischen. The case depends on whether the clause expresses movement (Akkusativ) or location (Dativ). A useful mnemonic: Wo? (where?) → Dativ; Wohin? (where to?) → Akkusativ.

What is the Wo/Wohin rule?

The Wo/Wohin rule applies to two-way (Wechsel) prepositions. Ask Wo? (static location) → Dativ. Ask Wohin? (direction/motion toward) → Akkusativ. "Das Buch liegt auf dem Tisch" (Wo? On the table — Dativ, static). "Ich lege das Buch auf den Tisch" (Wohin? Onto the table — Akkusativ, motion). Note: Woher? (where from?) also uses Dativ.

Do prepositions change in different tenses?

No — prepositions always require the same case regardless of tense. "Mit dem Zug" (with the train) is always Dativ whether you say "Ich fahre mit dem Zug" (present) or "Ich fuhr mit dem Zug" (Präteritum). Tense changes the verb; prepositions determine the case of the noun that follows them.
