Frequently asked questions
The must-haves: Bahnhof (station), Fahrkarte/Ticket (ticket), Gleis (platform), Abfahrt/Ankunft (departure/arrival), Verspätung (delay), and the direction words links/rechts/geradeaus. Add "Wie komme ich zu...?" (How do I get to...?) and you can navigate most situations. German public transport is thorough — learning these words makes it actually enjoyable.
"Einmal nach [destination], bitte" (One ticket to [destination], please). For returns: "Hin und zurück" (round trip). For timing: "Wann fährt der nächste Zug?" (When does the next train leave?). At a ticket machine, the interface is usually available in English — but knowing Abfahrt (departure), Gleis (platform), and Bahnsteig (platform number) helps.
Fahrkarte is the traditional German word for a land transport ticket — train, bus, tram. Ticket is the more modern/international term, used for flights, events, and increasingly for trains too (especially online purchases). Both are correct. At a German ticket counter, either word works fine.
"Entschuldigung, wie komme ich zum/zur [place]?" is the standard opener. Key responses: "geradeaus" (straight ahead), "links abbiegen" (turn left), "rechts abbiegen" (turn right), "an der Ampel" (at the traffic lights), "ungefähr X Minuten zu Fuß" (about X minutes on foot). Germans appreciate if you ask — they're generally helpful with directions.
