What each module asks of you at A2
This mock follows the real Goethe-Zertifikat A2 paper module for module. Lesen, Hören and Schreiben are the written exam — 90 minutes in one sitting — and Sprechen is taken separately, usually in a pair.
- Lesen (Reading)
- 4 Teile, 20 tasks, 30 minutes, worth 25 points. Task formats: multiple choice and matching.
- Hören (Listening)
- 4 Teile, 20 tasks, 30 minutes, worth 25 points. Task formats: multiple choice, matching and ja / nein.
- Schreiben (Writing)
- 2 Teile, 2 tasks, 30 minutes, worth 25 points. Task formats: a written response.
- Sprechen (Speaking)
- 3 Teile, 3 tasks, 15 minutes, worth 25 points. Task formats: a spoken response.
Our countdown covers all four in one 105-minute run so you feel the whole shape of the exam. In the real thing you get a break before Sprechen.
How the score works, and what 60% actually means
Each module carries 25 points, 100 across the paper. You pass at 60% — 60 of 100 points.
The Goethe-Institut awards the Goethe-Zertifikat A2 on your overall result, so a weak module can be carried by a strong one. That is worth knowing before you panic mid-Hören: the 25 points you are losing there are 25% of the paper, not all of it.
We grade Lesen and Hören here — 40 tasks, scored the moment you submit. Schreiben and Sprechen are judged by an examiner in the real exam, so no honest automatic score exists for them; you get model answers to compare against instead.
What you get back
Submitting ends the countdown and scores your 40 Lesen and Hören tasks immediately. Nothing is emailed, nothing needs an account.
- A per-module score
- Your Lesen and Hören points against the 25 available in each, with every question reviewable — the text, your answer, and the right one.
- Model answers for Schreiben
- The 2 prompts come with a model response at A2 standard, so you can see the register and length expected rather than guess at them.
- Model scripts for Sprechen
- All 3 speaking tasks come with a worked script, and you can practice the exchange with an AI examiner.
- A retake, whenever
- The same paper, a fresh countdown. Your previous attempt is cleared when you start over.
Is A2 the right level to sit?
Elementary — familiar topics, short transactional exchanges.
- Compared with A1
- A1 runs 80 minutes over 35 tasks; A2 runs 105 and asks 45. A2's Lesen alone gives you 30 minutes against 25 — longer texts, not just more of them.
- Compared with B1
- B1 steps up to 180 minutes and 66 tasks. Intermediate — independent use across familiar topics. Required minimum for German citizenship.
A2 does not meet the German citizenship requirement — that is B1. Treat this as the rung you climb, not the certificate you need.
Not sure where you stand? The free level test places you across A1–B1 in about eight minutes.
