Frequently asked questions
Start with the meal names (Frühstück, Mittagessen, Abendessen), the verbs essen and trinken, and Hunger/Durst. Then add the grocery staples you actually buy: Brot, Milch, Käse, Gemüse. Restaurant vocabulary (Speisekarte, bestellen, Rechnung) comes next — you'll need it within days of arriving in Germany.
The classic phrases: "Ich hätte gerne..." (I would like...), "Einmal bitte..." (One [dish] please), "Für mich das Hauptgericht" (The main course for me). To ask what's available: "Was können Sie empfehlen?" (What would you recommend?). To pay: "Die Rechnung, bitte" (The bill, please). Tipping: say "Stimmt so" to round up, or specify the amount.
Speisekarte is the full menu card — every dish listed. Menü is a set meal deal: usually starter + main + dessert at a fixed price, common at lunch. If you ask for "die Karte", you're asking for the Speisekarte. "Das Menü des Tages" is the daily set lunch special.
"Ich bin Vegetarier/Vegetarierin" (I am vegetarian), "Ich esse vegan" (I eat vegan), "Ich bin laktoseintolerant" (I am lactose intolerant), "Ich habe eine Glutenunverträglichkeit" (I have a gluten intolerance). For allergies: "Ich bin allergisch gegen Nüsse" (I am allergic to nuts). Germans are generally good at accommodating dietary requirements, especially in cities.
