German false friends — words that look English but aren't

Familiar words with different meanings are worse than unfamiliar ones — you think you know them. You don't. Here are the 60 most dangerous.

False friends exploit your pattern-recognition against you. When you see "Gift" you read "present." When you see "Chef" you think of kitchens. When you see "bald" you see a shaved head. None of these are right.

The worst offenders — real scenarios

Gift

A learner asked a pharmacy assistant for "a Gift for my wife" — wanting to buy a present. The assistant's expression was memorable.

Chef

At a restaurant, someone thanked the Chef for preparing the meal. The manager was flattered. The actual cook was confused.

sensibel

A learner described their colleague as "very sensibel" meaning reliable and reasonable. The colleague learned it meant sensitive and was mildly offended.

brav

Calling an adult colleague "sehr brav" meant to praise their courage. What they heard: "very well-behaved" — as if praising a child.

kontrollieren

A manager said "Ich kontrolliere dich" thinking it meant "I'm managing you." Actually: "I'm checking/inspecting you." Slightly sinister.

Partial false friends

These words overlap in meaning but aren't exact translations — the subtler traps:

  • Freund / Freundin Can mean "friend" OR "boyfriend/girlfriend" — context determines which. "Das ist meine Freundin" is ambiguous without context.
  • Familie Usually immediate/nuclear family only — not the extended family a German-American might assume is included.
  • Person Has a more formal or legal connotation in German — you wouldn't usually refer to a friend as "eine Person".
  • Idee Can mean "idea" but also "a hint/notion" — "keine Idee" often means "no clue" not "no ideas".

Avoid more traps

Knowing what not to say is half the battle. The full A1 course builds vocabulary systematically, with context that prevents false-friend errors before they happen.
